Never commissioned marketing research before?
If you are considering commissioning market research, you must have a range of questions for which you need to find answers. The first thing you will need to do is to make sure those questions are clearly framed-to define your research goals and identify what information could help you to solve your problems. In many ways, this is the most important step of any project: if the research aims are incomplete or are defined inaccurately, then not even the most perfectly executed research is likely to provide what you need.
Once you have defined your questions and set out the aims of the research, you can approach an agency (or several agencies); the agency will then work out a research proposal based on the information you have provided. If there are any special parameters you want taken into account at this point-if you have budgetary constraints, say, or if you have special requirements with regard to timing-then you should make these clear when you submit your request. It is very likely that the agency will offer you a personal meeting to discuss everything before finalizing the proposal, especially if the research issue is complex.
Following discussion, the research agency will draw up an initial research proposal. This will usually contain the following information:
- The overall research concept (how the research will be conducted)
- The methodology which will be used to acquire your data (how the respondents will be interviewed)
- The suggested target group (who will be interviewed)
- The sample size (how many interviews will be carried out)
- An outline of the structure and length of the questionnaire (for quantitative research) or an interview synopsis (for qualitative research) (what we are going to ask)
- A timing schedule (when and how quickly each stage of the research will be carried out)
- An outline of the division of responsibilities between the agency and the client (who will be responsible for what tasks and who will supply what materials)
- The price of the research
- The contact person responsible for the research on the part of the agency
You will of course be able to discuss any and all of these parameters with the agency. Once the research parameters have been agreed and you have given the project the go-ahead, the research agency will conduct the whole research project in accordance with your instructions. The agency will usually prepare any questionnaires or interview guidelines, conduct all interviews, write up and analyze the data, and prepare a research report including a summary of main findings and a list of recommendations. In most instances, the researchers will also arrange to present their findings to you and any chosen representatives in person-and this can be followed up with workshops, meetings, or suchlike (if appropriate, and if agreed with the agency). The research findings are then yours to use as a basis for marketing or business decisions.
